Austria is an awesome year-round destination, but it is just that little bit extra special during the winter. Not only is there skiing and snowboarding on offer, but you’ll be able to go on romantic walks, take horse-drawn sleigh rides, and enjoy the views out over the Dachstein Massif from a balloon. That is, of course, if you leave from Filzmoos.

Filzmoos is one of the quieter Alpine resorts, so you can be assured of a traditional Austrian welcome. The rural charm and friendly atmosphere haven’t been diluted by large tour operators and hordes of tourists. Except during the Balloon Trophy competition at the start of the year!
In this post, we’ll take a look at how to plan a weekend in Filzmoos in winter. Let’s check it out!

A snowshoe hike around the Almsee
There are several winter walks at Filzmoos. After taking your sleigh ride to the Oberhofalm, embark on a circular snowshoe hike to the Almsee. This is a peaceful and idyllic mountain lake at the foot of Bischofsmütze. From here, the views of the mountains are absolutely incredible and the hike isn’t difficult. Dinner in one of the Hofalmen
The Oberhof Alm has been at the foot of Bischofsmütze for more than 350 years. Enjoy traditional Austrian cooking here, as well as a large sun terrace if the weather’s good, and a cosy lounge if it isn’t. Just a minute away, you also have the Unterhof Alm, which was built in 1776. It has incredible views of the Almsee and delicious food.

Balloon Ride
Get up nice and early on your first full day in Filzmoos to get to know the other side of Filzmoos. Known as the Balloon Village, the best time to visit is in January – when it hosts the International Balloon Weeks. Whenever you visit, be sure to enjoy a sunrise balloon ride to see your Alpine surroundings from a different and unforgettable perspective.
Snowshoeing and sledge ride
If you want to go further than the standard walking trails but don’t have any skiing or snowboarding experience, then perhaps turn to snowshoeing instead. There are beginner snowshoeing classes for individuals and families – while if you really want to, you can dedicated your entire weekend to it! However, if you found yourself just wanting more from the horse-drawn sleigh ride, take a sledge ride through Filzmoos instead.
Dinner at the Happy Filzmoos Hotel
After an action-packed day, you’ll have worked up an appetite. The cosy restaurant not only offers old-fashioned Austrian hospitality, but Mediterranean cuisine too – prepared from fresh and high-quality products.

Skiing in Filzmoos
No winter holiday to Austria is complete without skiing or snowboarding. As part of Ski Amadé, a network of 28 ski areas in Salzburg and Styria and the second largest ski network in Europe, you’re in the right place. As Filzmoos is rather quiet, you’ll have plenty of space to find your balance, so it’s perfect for beginners and families.

Lunch/Stop in one of our ski huts.
Dotted across the mountains around Filzmoos, you’ll find several places you can stop off for some hearty Austrian grub or a warming mulled wine (or a schnapps if you’re looking for something a little stronger). Just make sure you don’t drink too much before you ski back down to the village!
